Fluke now manufactures infrared thermometers and imaging devices. These devices remotely measure temperature by measuring the radiance of an object. To calibrate these devices they are aimed at temperature plates of known temperature. The exactness of the correct temperature is not as important as knowing, as closely as possible, the actual temperature of the plate. For example, if a device has a calibration point at 100 C, a plate that is at 103.4 C can be used, and the unit will be adjusted for 103.4 C instead of 100 C.

In order to keep track of the actual temperature of the plates, their values are frequently measured and compared to a Control Chart.
