World Metrology Day 2020 – Measurements for Global Trade
In this video celebrating World Metrology Day 2020, Fluke Chief Corporate Metrologist Jeff Gust explains why measurements are critical to enabling global trade.
Transcript
Hi, my name’s Jeff Gust, and I’m the Chief Corporate Metrologist for Fluke Corporation. I’m taking this video today from my home office up in in Washington State, where I’m working from home during the coronavirus pandemic.
Even with all that is going on right now, I believe it’s important to talk about World Metrology Day, which we celebrate on May 20. The theme of World Metrology Day 2020 is “Measurements for global trade.” Now more than ever, I think we can easily see how we are all connected around the world, and the science of measurements is a vital part of that connection.
Without accurate measurements, it is probably going to be difficult, if not impossible, to improve productivity, implement standards and regulations, and keep the population healthy and safe. It can mean the difference between a thriving global economy and one that is economically struggling.
The ability to make accurate measurements supports global trade in many ways:
Measurements allow us to create global supply chains where consistency, safety, and quality are defined and maintained. They allow us to ensure that the products we manufacture can be used interchangeably by people around the world.
They enable us to establish requirements for product compatibility and uniform measurements.
Measurements empower us to define what we mean by “quality” in a way that lets companies meet customers’ expectations, and allow customers to make informed choices, for the products we purchase and the things we do every day.
They help us to protect the global environment by allowing us to set and maintain standards for things like air, water and food quality.
Measurements are also vital to scientific discovery and innovations. After all, you can’t innovate unless you can measure what you are trying to improve.
Ultimately, the ability to make and share measurements between countries builds trust between them and improves relationships and the ability to trade goods and services.
Fluke is a leader in calibration instrumentation and software for electrical, temperature, humidity, pressure, flow, and RF measurements. Fluke Calibration products are found in calibration facilities around the world, including National Metrology Institutes, that demand the highest levels of performance and reliability, backed by state-of-the-art metrology and uncompromising support. They are relied upon by quality engineers, calibration technicians, and metrologists to instill confidence in the measurements that are critical to their organizations for quality, safety, reliability, and cost.
So I hope you’ll spend a few minutes today thinking about how measurements affect the quality and safety of our every day lives. And on behalf of Fluke Corporation, Happy World Metrology Day.
